Master ICS
Year 2026-2027
For 2026-2027, the module is officially listed as FARE - Fundamental of Analog and RF electronics in administrative documents. As the module evolves, teaching is organized around the new title Design of Modern Wireless Communication Systems, bringing together the analog and digital building blocks of a wireless transceiver.
The course (now) progresses from communication theory and signals to baseband filtering and data conversion, RF front-end blocks and mixers, frequency synthesis, and system-level transceiver specifications. It then explores software-defined radio (SDR) hardware and synchronization. Students learn how noise, distortion and other circuit limitations affect communication performance, and how to translate system requirements into specifications for individual building blocks.
Lectures are complemented by labs on baseband processing, RF front-end simulation and radio implementation. The final grade is a weighted score of the final exam and lab work.
